Falls sending more Canadians to hospital, report shows

July 5, 2018

Originally published in the Globe and Mail A raised bit of concrete on a sidewalk. An icy patch on the road. A misstep on the stairs at home. All of these can lead to accidental falls — landing a person not only on the ground, but often also in hospital. Unintentional falls are the most common form of injury across the country: every day last year, falls resulted in almost 1,800 reported emergency department visits and 417 hospital admissions, says a new report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). In 2016-17, nearly 654,000 — or about one-third — of the more than two million injury-related emergency department visits were … Read more

That’s part of the message he imparted during a class last Tuesday a Charleswood seniors centre, where more than a dozen people were gathered to practice movements most people do every day without thinking.   While Aretha Franklin’s raucous cover of The Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby blasted over the speakers, Schindle led the seniors through a routine designed to increase their strength and balance, with the aim of helping prevent falls. “I want people to know that … Read more

Adding other therapy to exercise may be best for fall prevention

November 7, 2017

Originally published by Reuters   (Reuters Health) – Older adults who exercise may be half as likely to fall as their inactive counterparts, and adding therapies like eye exams, vitamins and home repairs may lower the risk even more, a research review suggests. Researchers examined data from 238 previously published results with a total of about 160,000 people age 65 or older. All of the studies were experiments that randomly assigned participants to receive exercise or other interventions for fall prevention, usual care such as education, or no help at all. Compared to usual care, people who were assigned to exercise programs were 49 percent less likely to have a … Read more
